(SAN DIEGO, CA, 5/19/15) â€“ The San Diego chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-San Diego) today asked law enforcement authorities to investigate the motive of a man observed on May 14 taking photographs of vehicle license plates at the Islamic Center of San Diego.

When the man was approached by mosque members and asked what he was doing, he claimed he did not speak English.

CAIR-San Diego’s request comes in the wake of a recent plea deal with a Tennessee man who planned a deadly attack on a New York Muslim community.

“Given the fact that a terror plot targeting American Muslims was recently thwarted by the FBI, it is important that the motivation of anyone engaged in such suspicious activity be investigated,” said CAIR-San Diego Executive Director Hanif Mohebi.

The San Diego Muslim community has been targeted in the past.

CAIR is urging Islamic institutions to implement safety measures outlined in its booklet, "Best Practices for Mosque and Community Safety.”

CAIR is America's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
