Who Are They? 

The California State Senate is a government entity at the state level tasked with making state laws and determining fiscal priorities via the state budget. It works together with the California State Assembly as part of the California State Legislature. 

What Do They Do? 

The State Senate’s responsibilities include: 

  • Proposing, discussing, and deciding on laws.  
  • Collaborating with the Assembly and the Governor to finalize and oversee California’s state budget, distributing resources to different programs and projects.  
  • Maintaining a balance of power among the Assembly, the Senate, and the Governor.  
  • Tackling legislative matters related to Healthcare, Education, Social Services, Environmental Policies, and other areas.  

The California State Senate is a key component of the state’s Legislative Branch, responsible for managing legislative and financial issues, including healthcare, education, and environmental policies. It ensures a balance of power, represents the interests of its constituents, and is a fundamental part of California’s democratic governance and public policy framework. 

How Are They Elected? 

Members of the California State Senate are elected by voters within their districts and serve four-year terms, with terms lasting no more than 12 years.
