More than 1 million Uyghur Muslims have been sent to camps run by the Chinese government for ideological indoctrination and forced labor.
Uyghur children have been forcibly separated from their parents and sent to orphanages to be raised as communists, and at least a million members of the Chinese Communist Party have been sent to live with Uyghur families as mandatory, supervisory “guests.”
The Uyghurs are a predominantly Muslim, ethnically Turkic people whose ancestral homeland was annexed by the People’s Republic of China. China refers to its Uyghur region as Xinjiang, which means ‘new territory’. Recently the Chinese state has escalated its campaign of suppression in the name of security. Estimates of the number of Uighurs in involuntary detainment range from 1 to 3 million.
UyghurLA – with the endorsement of CAIR Greater LA, Peace Catalyst International, ICNA, Sound Vision and others – are organizing a rally in Los Angeles on April 6 to free the Uyghur people, who continue to face systematic, escalating persecution in China. Allies from the interfaith community will also attend to send a strong message that such brazen violations of human rights are unacceptable and to call on the U.S. government to act.
