The California chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-CA) today applauded Gov. Gavin Newsom’s State of the State address in which he took a stand against President Donald Trump’s xenophobic policies.
“Among the governor’s many policy commitments, CAIR-California applauds Gov. Newsom’s defiance against Trump’s inhumane immigration agenda. Trump’s attempt to demonize asylum-seekers at our border and mislead the public about the need for a wall is a charade – nothing more,” said Yannina Casillas, CAIR-CA government and legislative affairs coordinator. “Newsom’s address affirmed that California won’t fall for this administration’s falsehoods and false rhetoric and will instead lead the way on a compassionate approach to immigration. We look forward to solving policy issues together and creating a more accessible, affordable and equitable #californiaforall.”
In his speech Tuesday, Newsom painted Trump’s State of the Union speech and policies as “fundamentally at odds with California values.”
A day after announcing the planned withdrawal of the majority of California’s National Guard troops working with the federal government at the U.S.-Mexico border, Newsom defended asylum-seekers whom Trump has villainized in an attempt to get funding for a border wall.
Beginning in December 2018, the federal government experienced a partial shutdown for a record 35 days after Congress and the White House failed to reach a compromise on a spending bill that capitulated to Trump’s demand for $5.7 billion in funds for a border wall.
CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
