(LOS ANGELES, CA – 06/28/2024) – The Greater Los Angeles Area office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-LA) today joined faith leaders and hundreds of community members from diverse backgrounds outside City Hall in Los Angeles for a historic interfaith call to prayer and peace rally for a ceasefire in Gaza.

During the peace rally, leaders representing faith-based organizations throughout the Greater LA area, including CAIR-LA, the Muslim Public Affairs Council, Islamic Shura Council of Southern California, Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP), Latino & Muslim Unity, Black Lives Matter LA, and IfNotNow held a press conference where speakers called for an end to the ongoing genocide and humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Speakers also called on the LA City Council to condemn the recent violence from pro-Israel groups against pro-Palestinian demonstrators who were protesting an event allegedly promoting the sale of illegally occupied Palestinian land last weekend.

The peace rally was followed by a community Jumu’ah, or Friday, prayer at City Hall.

In a statement, CAIR-LA Policy Manager Basha Jamil said:

“This is a movement [for Palestinian liberation] with broad support from people with all kinds of backgrounds including our Jewish brothers and sisters who have also not been spared Zionist violence when they call for an end to Israel’s genocide in Gaza.

“We are deeply disappointed that the Los Angeles City Council continues to perpetuate this dangerous and false narrative and use it to crush our constitutional right to free speech and assembly. We call on the Los Angeles city council to speak up against the genocide in Gaza and join cities from across the state and across the country, including San Francisco, Oakland, Long Beach, Santa Monica, Pomona, Montebello, and so many others, in calling for a ceasefire.

“We call on the council to reject a proposed motion of spending one million dollars of public funding, of taxpayer money, to fund private security for Zionist groups … We call on the council to do the right thing, investigate hate crimes, hold Zionists accountable, and protect your American Muslim communities.”

For nearly nine months, Israel’s ongoing, violent military operations in Gaza have devastated entire communities, obliterated infrastructure, and killed more than 40,000 Palestinian civilians, a majority of whom are women and children. Approximately 1.5 million people have been forcibly displaced and are facing a catastrophic humanitarian crisis as Israel continues to cut off food, water, electricity, and medical supplies to Gaza.

CAIR-LA is Southern California’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice and empower American Muslims.
