(LOS ANGELES, CA – 6/24/2020) – The Greater Los Angeles Area office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-LA) today congratulated the L.A. County Board of Supervisors for passing a resolution declaring July as Muslim American Heritage Month for the first time.

The resolution, unanimously passed at the board’s June 23 meeting, was introduced by Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas. The resolution noted the recognition of Muslim heritages will “celebrate and raise awareness of the contributions and rich history of Muslim Americans throughout the nation.”

In a statement, CAIR-LA Executive Director Hussam Ayloush said:

“The Muslim community is a thriving part of this great county and continues to make significant contributions in numerous fields. Even in the face of the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, members of our community have stepped up to provide leadership and support to others throughout the region.

“We are especially thankful to Supervisor Ridley-Thomas for proposing and championing this resolution and applaud the board for passing it unanimously. We look forward to honoring the Muslims who have enriched Los Angeles county while inspiring the next generation to do the same.”

CAIR-LA Community Organizer Najee Ali, also the CEO of Project Islamic HOPE, a faith-based organization, worked with Supervisor Ridley-Thomas’ office to get this resolution introduced.

“It’s a historic day for the Muslim community throughout the county of Los Angeles,” said Ali. “We look forward to sharing the best of Islam and our various cultural traditions with our fellow Angelenos. I want to thank Supervisor Ridley-Thomas for championing the cause, and to the rest of the board for its support.”

CAIR-LA is Southern California’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice and empower American Muslims.
