Rather than shoulder the cost of a drawn-out legal battle, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office says, it has settled a religious rights case involving a Muslim woman who was forced to remove her religious head covering, known as a hijab, while in custody. …

Her complaint—filed May 7 with aid from the Greater Los Angeles Area chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a Muslim advocacy group—said that after she was taken to the county’s main jail, a sheriff’s deputy “yanked” the hijab off her head and officers would not let her put it back on. Hyatt said she told intake staff she was a practicing Muslim, to which a deputy allegedly replied, “Not in here you’re not.”
