Born in Puerto Rico and raised in Los Angeles, Ms. Mirvette is a Palestinian-American, a wife and a mother of three, who has been committed to many humanitarian and political causes in the American Muslim and greater communities throughout her life.
Mirvette is multilingual, speaking Spanish, Arabic and English. She has a Master’s in Psychology from Pepperdine University and her undergraduate degree from UC, Irvine.
She has been invited on various panels to speak about Islamophobia, fair representation among government bodies, the power of voting and her personal experiences donning the hijab. She has been quoted in the O.C. Register, L.A. Times and featured in Reuters, KTLA 5, Telemundo, Univision and NPR via Next Generation Radio.
Mirvette says: “I began wearing Hijab in April 3, 2015 to fight back the negative image that ISIS had created of our beautiful religion. I wanted to stand up for my faith, all the hijabees out there, and for what it truly means to be an American. I made it my mission to interact with members of other communities and organizations so that if someone had a question or a false perception of Islam, I would help diminish the image the media and terror groups had created of my faith.”
Most recently, she garnered support for and spoke at the Peace Rally in Anaheim in response to the hateful and violent acts members of the KKK committed in the city of Anaheim and was vocal against the hate and divide some presidential candidates are creating with anti-Muslim rhetoric.
She is currently an executive board member for the Arab American Caucus for the California Democrats and a Democratic Delegate to the 65th district, in which she serves as an advocate for political matters affecting her district.
Ms. Mirvette has been intricately involved in the recent Anaheim Redistricting Campaign, a historic campaign to bring district elections to thousands of residents in Anaheim, CA. She was involved with the Measures L & M campaign from its inception, as a volunteer with OCCORD and UNITE HERE Local 11, engaging in precinct walks with her daughter Salma (who was almost two at the time) and phone banking thousands of Anaheim residents to make them aware of the campaign. She was involved till the end, participating in rallies and meetings even after the measures had passed to ensure that the People’s Map will be upheld. Mirvette’s dedication and efforts in actualizing the district elections will help ensure that working families as well as the greater Anaheim community will have a voice in the City Council.
To empower women, Mirvette has been involved with IIOC’s Women’s Committee (the Islamic Institute of Orange County), assisting single mothers in OC, and helped create a college scholarship for young women excelling. She helped raise funds for Southern California’s first Muslim Women’s shelter – a project of ICNA Relief.
Ms. Mirvette also dedicates her time to humanitarian causes around the world. She has organized and participated in various fundraisers and marathons to raise funds for the children and refugees of Syria and Gaza.
“As a mother of three, I have no other choice but to do this to make the future bright for our children”, says Mirvette. “I believe when we work on building bridges over time the walls and barriers that separate us tumble down. I am proud to be an American Muslim, and I will continue to use my right to speak and act to positively influence my community one day at a time, one vote at a time, one smile at a time.”
