On Tuesday, Aug. 19, the Simi Valley City Council unanimously approved upgrades to the Islamic Society of Simi Valley (ISSV), marking a significant milestone for the Simi Valley community.

The Simi Valley Planning Commission approved the plan in May, but the final decision was left to the City Council and faced some opposition from certain Islamophobic and biased individuals within the Simi Valley community. After five years of dedicated advocacy from the community, including 1,325 letters sent to City Council members via a recent CAIR-LA Action Alert, the City Council’s approval means ISSV can begin to break-ground on the plans for renovations.

ISSV plans to upgrade its facility with classrooms, bathrooms, a kitchen, and youth learning spaces. The masjid serves all residents of Simi Valley and these upgrades will allow it to continue supporting the community’s well-being. ISSV provides important community services and resources, including meals, vaccine clinics, and more.

In a statement, ISSV Imam Omar Jubran said:

“On behalf of the Islamic Society of Simi Valley, I would like to extend heartfelt congratulations to our community on the unanimous approval from the Simi Valley City Council for the expansion of our beloved masjid. This achievement marks a significant milestone and is truly a dream come true for all of us.

“The success of the project to date is a testament to the determination and dedication of our community. The journey to this moment has been driven by our collective commitment to providing a larger, more accommodating space for Simi Valley Muslims to gather, pray, and connect with one another.

“We are deeply grateful to the Simi Valley City Council and the Planning Commission for their understanding and respect towards our community’s needs. Their support throughout this process reflects the strong relationship we have built and their recognition of the importance of this expansion for our community. May this new chapter bring immense blessings and continued growth for all of us, Insha’Allah.”
