The House of Representatives recently voted to approve the Anti-BDS Labeling Act (H.R. 5179)—a bill that would allow deceptive labeling practices by requiring products made in illegally occupied areas of the West Bank to be labeled as “made in Israel.”

The legislation passed with 231 votes in favor, including 13 Representatives from California.

Who Voted Yes

The following representatives from California voted in support of the bill:

Rep. Ken Calvert (R) Rep. Doug LaMalfa (R)
Rep. John Duarte (R) Rep. Tom McClintock (R)
Rep. Vince Fong (R) Rep. Jay Obernolte (R)
Rep. Mike Garcia (R) Rep. Michelle Steel (R)
Rep. Darrell Issa (R) Rep. David Valadao (R)
Rep. Kevin Kiley (R) Rep. Juan Vargas (D)
Rep. Young Kim (R)

Why It Matters

The deceptive labeling proposed by H.R. 5179 undermines Palestinian rights and misleads Americans. Labeling products from unlawful Israeli settlements as “made in Israel” obscures the reality that they are made in Palestinian territories that are illegally occupied under international law.

This legislation is also a direct attack on the First Amendment-protected Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement—a peaceful form of advocacy that seeks to hold Israel accountable for its human rights violations and atrocities committed against Palestinians.

Urge Senate To Oppose H.R. 5179

H.R. 5179 is currently in the Senate Finance Committee. By advancing this legislation, the U.S. government would not only favor Israeli interests but also interfere with the rights of American consumers to make informed, ethical decisions about the products they purchase.
