The California chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-CA)joined more than 500 Muslim delegates from across the country for National Muslim Advocacy Dayat the nation’s capital this week!
The U.S. Council of Muslim Organizations (USCMO) held its 8th annual National Muslim Advocacy Day Monday, June 12 through Wednesday, June 14, on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., where delegates from Muslim organizations nationwide met to advocate for important issues for the American Muslim community.
This year, delegates supported:
- The House and Senate cosponsorship of Representative Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), and Senator Cory Booker’s (D-NJ) ’Combating Internal Islamophobia Act.’
- The House and Senate cosponsorship of Representative Andre Carson (D-IN) and Senator Cory Booker’s soon-to-be-reintroduced ’Muslim-American Heritage Month’ resolution.
- Greater congressional oversight and reform of the unconstitutional and discriminatory federal terrorism watchlist.
As a result of our advocacy, this week, Representative Katie Porter (D-CA) wrote a letter to President Biden urging his administration to take action to address the disparities in the FBI’s terrorism watchlist.
Delegates also called for:
- The reintroduction of Representative Earl Blumenauer’s (D-OR) ‘Afghan Adjustment Act.’
- Congressional action in response to human rights violations in Pakistan.
Members from CAIR-CA offices held a total of 29 meetings with staff, Representatives, and Senators from several states to create meaningful dialogue around these issues and discuss their impact on the American Muslim community.
