CAIR-Sacramento Holding Press Conference After Sentencing Hearing for the Convicted Murderer of Iraqi-American

(SACRAMENTO, CA, 2/23/17) The Sacramento Valley office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-SV), will be holding a press conference following the sentencing hearing for the murderer of Iraqi American Hassan Alawsi.

Hassan Alawsi, a Muslim man of Iraqi heritage was shot and killed in a Home Depot parking lot allegedly because the assailant had "severe hatred" of Middle Easterners. Police say Hassan Alawsi's assailant stalked him in the Sacramento, Calif., parking lot before gunning him down on March 16, 2014.

In a statement, CAIR-SV Executive Director, Basim Elkarra, said:

"Justice was served for the Alwasi family and the American Muslim community. Hassan Alaswi left a war-torn Iraq to find a safe place to live with his family, and he went back in a casket. Politicians should understand that hateful rhetoric has deadly consequences. The jury verdict signals an unequivocal message that hate in any form will not be tolerated in our great city, state, and nation."

In 2014 CAIR-SV held a press conference with law enforcement, elected officials and community leaders to address the hate motivated murder of Hassan Alwasi.
