(SACRAMENTO, CA, 5/28/20) – The Sacramento Valley office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-SV) today condemned a racist incident at a Sacramento woman’s residence that was caught on video surveillance.
In footage that was shared with KCRA 3, the victim’s home surveillance camera captured a woman running up to the victim’s front door and spitting on it twice, then returning to throw a package at the door and saying a racial slur. The woman then drives away.
Sacramento police are investigating the incident as a hate crime.
In a statement, CAIR-SV Executive Director Basim Elkarra said:
“We condemn this appalling racist incident. To use such hateful language and vandalize someone’s home is abhorrent, and amid COVID-19, spitting on someone’s door is dangerous. It underscores how far we have to go to combat bigotry, along with the importance of implementing ethnic studies curriculum and the need to uplift marginalized voices. As a community, we must call out and stand up to racism and bigotry in all forms.”
Elkarra urged community members to report any bias incidents to law enforcement and to CAIR-SV’s Civil Rights Department at 916-441-6269 or by filing a report at http://bit.ly/cairsvreport.
CAIR-SV is an office of CAIR, America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice and empower American Muslims.
