(SACRAMENTO, CA, 4/19/17) The Sacramento Valley office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-SV), today welcomed the guilty plea on all charges for the Hate Crime against the Islamic Center of Davis. 

Davis native Lauren Kirk-Coehlo pled guilty today (4/19/17) to vandalism and hate crimes for vandalizing the Islamic Center of Davis back on January 22, 2017. She could face up to six years in state prison when she is sentenced in June.

 

Kirk-Coehlo was arrested on Feb. 14 when she was suspected of wrapping pork (Muslims hold a strict dietary restriction that includes pork and pork related products) around the handle of the mosque’s doors, breaking six of the mosque’s windows, and damaging several bicycles that were parked in front of the mosque.

In a statement, CAIR-SV Civil Rights Attorney Saad Sweilem, said:

 

“We hope this sends a message that there are consequences for hate crimes and this case will make others think twice before carrying out such crimes.”
