Public Affairs and Policy Coordinator

The CAIR San Diego area is looking for a passionate and talented individual to fill the Public Affairs and Policy Coordinator position at its San Diego office.  Join one of the most dynamic teams defending civil rights on behalf of the American Muslim community and strengthening the image of Islam and American Muslims in the media. Job Description:

 

The candidate will be the primary face of CAIR in working with the Muslim community and the broader public, facilitating productive communication with community leadership as well as government agencies, conducting speaking engagements, and fulfilling media requests.  The candidate also will be responsible for advocating and promoting policy solutions for issues that impact Muslims and the broader American public. Responsibilities will include advocating for just and inclusive policies when interacting both with local and federal government agencies.  The candidate must be comfortable working productively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment and a rapidly growing organization.  The role requires excellent communication, research and managerial skills to interface with staff, community leaders and volunteers in a professional, effective manner. Candidate should be flexible with changing job requirements as the team grows. Some work on evenings, weekends, and travel will be required.

 

 

Primary Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Develop both external and internal partnerships for community outreach purposes
  • Develop relationships with relevant community groups and implement tactical elements of partnerships at the grassroots level
  • Maintaining, building and strengthening relationships with elected officials, law enforcement and government agencies
  • Prepare an outreach plan in conjunction with the direct supervisor and update the plan on a quarterly basis.
  • Conducting seminars, workshops or other related programs for community members and partner organizations
  • Represent CAIR-SD at meetings and other appropriate local coalitions
  • Outreach and fundraise at local events
  • Monitor local and state legislative and policy initiatives related to the American Muslim community
  • Advocate for civil liberties on issues involving local law enforcement and national security
  • Work to secure an environment free from discrimination, harassment and bullying for Muslim students through policy advocacy and community engagement
  • Build and strengthen relationships with elected officials, law enforcement and government agencies by participating in task forces and advisory councils
  • Plan local civic engagement programs, conduct presentations and speak on issues of public policy at community centers, mosques, college campuses and with local and national media
  • Develop fact sheets, advocacy materials, action alerts and reports and policy briefs
  • Develop and manage relationships with relevant groups and implement tactical elements of partnerships at the grassroots level
  • Lead voter engagement efforts to register, educate, and mobilize the Muslim community
  • Represent CAIR-SD at meetings, events and other appropriate local coalitions
  • General admin and office work required

 

Skills & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; JD and Attorneys barred in CA preferred 
  • 2 to 4 years of relevant experience
  • Self-directed individual, strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple ongoing initiatives
  • Strong internet/social media skills
  • Knowledge of issues relating to the American Muslim community, community relations, coalition-building, and activism
  • Strong experience working with the American Muslim community
  • Understanding of the variety of civil liberty issues at stake in dealing with issues of law enforcement, national security, campus climate, and school bullying
  • Strong research and writing skills, particularly on issues involving public policy and civil liberties  
  • Experience working with, and knowledge of issues relating to, the American Muslim community, community relations, coalition-building, and activism
  • Proven commitment to protecting civil rights and liberties
  • Self-directed individual, strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple ongoing initiatives
  • Ability to remain flexible and prioritize multiple tasks and deadlines
  • Experience with public speaking and fundraising
  • Preferred experience with Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Video Editing software programs
  • General knowledge of IT, and website maintenance.
  • General admin and office work required

Performance Review:
Please note that all new employees go through a background check and a 3-6 month probation period.  This position reports to the HR Manager and Executive Director.
