Why this Film?

FBI’s targeting of Muslims has had a deep and lasting impact on the Muslim community. Far before 9/11 the US had targeted the Muslim and fabricated an image that he was both dangerous and disruptive to American social and political life.

“With unprecedented access, THE FEELING OF BEING WATCHED weaves the personal and the political as it follows the filmmaker’s examination of why her community-including her own family-fell under blanket government surveillance. Assia struggles to disrupt the government secrecy shrouding what happened and takes the FBI to federal court to compel them to make the records they collected about her community public. In the process, she confronts long-hidden truths about the FBI’s relationship to her community.

THE FEELING OF BEING WATCHED follows Assia as she pieces together this secret FBI operation, while grappling with the effects of a lifetime of surveillance on herself and her family.”

What Are We Doing?

In 2019, CAIR-SFBA will be holding monthly movie nights at the office.

This is an opportunity to collectively engage in learning, to give context, empathy, and depth to our solidarity and understanding of self. This is an opportunity to raise the consciousness of our community, by exposing one another to the stories and experiences often made invisible to us and often experienced by our own community members. Through this learning, may we be moved to address difficult and challenging social, political, and economic needs of this country.

We hope that you can join us every month in addressing a topic relevant to our commitment to Justice for the oppressed and marginalized.

We will post suggested readings for you to think through and prepare for a short community reflection.

This is a free event. Food and snacks will be provided.

We are excited to be learning with you, inshaAllah.
