In 2019, CAIR-SFBA will be holding a monthly movie night at the office.
This is an opportunity to collectively engage in learning, to give context, empathy, and depth to our solidarity and understanding of self. This is an opportunity to raise the consciousness of our community, by exposing one another to the stories and experiences often made invisible to us and often experienced by our own community members. Through this learning, may we be moved to address difficult and challenging social, political, and economic needs of this country.
This month’s featured film is the incredibly powerful film “Precious Knowledge”, by Ari Palos!
Why this Film?
“Precious Knowledge provides an insider’s perspective, as student leaders fight to save their classes. The students are able to mobilize rapidly with texts, Facebook, optimism, and a megaphone.
Lawmakers and politicians a mount a public relations campaign to discredit the passionate students, claiming that Paulo Freire’s textbook The Pedagogy of the Oppressed teaches victimization and sedition. Officials ask that the classroom’s Che Guevara posters be replaced with portraits of founding father Benjamin Franklin. Meanwhile, the students answer back by fighting for what they believe is the future of public education for the entire nation, especially as the Latino demographic continues to grow.”
We will post suggested readings for you to think through and prepare for a short community reflection!
This is a free event and food will be provided.
We are excited to learning with you inshaAllah!
