In 2019, CAIR-SFBA will be holding a monthly movie night at the office.
This is an opportunity to collectively engage in learning, to give context, empathy, and depth to our solidarity and understanding of self. This is an opportunity to raise the consciousness of our community, by exposing one another to the stories and experiences often made invisible to us and often experienced by our own community members. Through this learning, may we be moved to address difficult and challenging social, political, and economic needs of this country.
This month’s featured film is the award winning ‘And Then They Came for Us’, directed by Abby Ginzberg and Ken Schneider.
Why this Film?
As the anniversary of the Muslim Ban dawns upon us on January 27, bringing with it a reality of continued imperialism, we reflect on our history. 75 years ago, Executive Order 9066 paved the way to the profound violation of constitutional rights that resulted in the forced incarceration of 120,000 Japanese Americans.
“They Came for Us” brings history into the present, retelling this difficult story and following Japanese American activists as they speak out against the Muslim registry and travel ban. Knowing our history is the first step to ensuring we do not repeat it. And Then They Came for Us is a cautionary and inspiring tale for these dark times.”
“It was a failure of American democracy, and yet because most Americans are not aware of that dark chapter of American history, it’s about to be repeated.”
– George Takei, Actor and Activist
