On the bright June day Sumayah Albadani said goodbye to her 10-year-old daughter in Egypt, she lacked the courage to tell the girl she was leaving for good — and moving halfway across the world with the rest of the family.

Albadani hugged Raghad Saleh outside a neighbor’s apartment in Cairo before quickly turning away. Soon she was on a plane to America with two of her other children.
