November 7, 2016

Election Day is this coming Tuesday, November 8th!
Do you have questions about voting? Please review the “know your rights” information below before going to the polls:

  • To check if you are registered to vote, visit the Secretary of State website.
  • Polling places will be open from 7:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M. Your polling place is listed on the back of the sample ballot you received in the mail. If you did not receive or lost your sample ballot, you can look up your polling place online at the Secretary of State website.
    • If you are not able to make it to your designated polling place on Election Day, and did not vote early or through a vote-by-mail ballot, you can still vote using a provisional ballot at any other polling location in the same county.
  • If you have a vote-by-mail ballot it must be postmarked by Election Day and received no later than three days after Election Day. If you feel that it may not be received on time, you can drop it off any polling place in your county before 8:00 P.M.
    • If you have a vote-by-mail ballot but want to vote at a polling place on Election Day, you may turn in your mail-in ballot there or vote using a provisional ballot. To turn in your mail-in ballot, vote, seal, sign, date, and state your address prior to arriving at the polling station.
  • You may bring any person of your choice to assist you with voting at your polling location, including translating services or a family member. Your employer, however, cannot accompany you while you are voting.
  • You can check to see your vote-by-mail ballot status and whether or not your provisional ballot was counted by visiting the Secretary of State website.
  • You must be in line at the polling place prior to the polls closing at 8:00 P.M. in order to vote.
  • You do not need photo identification to vote in California, unless you are a first-time voter and did not provide your driver’s license number or the last four digits of your social security number when you registered. If this is the case, you need to include a copy of your identification if you are voting by mail and you may be asked to provide identification if are you voting in person.
    • Acceptable forms of identification include: driver’s license, passport, employee identification card, or student identification card. For more examples of acceptable identification as a first-time voter in California, visit the Voter ID website.

If you or a loved one is faced with any Voter Rights issues on November 8th, all CAIR-CA chapters will be available as a Voter Rights resource, via the Washington Lawyers Committee.
