Dear Community Members,
As-salamu Aleikum,
This summer, CAIR-SFBA proudly celebrates its 30th anniversary, marking three decades of unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and empowerment. Our theme for this milestone year, The Future of Muslim Power, embodies our dedication to building a stronger, more empowered Muslim community that stands resilient against adversity and champions justice for all.
Over the Decades: A Legacy of Progress
Since our journey began in 1994, we have grown, adapted, and expanded our efforts to meet the evolving needs of our community.
1994-2004: The Founding Years
- Launched CAIR’s first campaign to combat anti-Muslim stereotypes in the movie True Lies, resulting in a first-ever disclaimer in the end credits.
- Published our first report on anti-Muslim discrimination following the Oklahoma City bombing.
- Won major hijab cases against Sears, Quality Inn Hotels, JC Penney, and Office Max.
- Challenged Nike on its shoe design that resembled the word Allah, leading to an apology and recall.
2004-2014: Growth and Impact
- Released national public service announcements to combat anti-Muslim bigotry, viewed by over 13 million people.
- Introduced the Muslim Youth Leadership Program (MYLP), empowering young leaders.
- Held the first annual Muslim Day at the Capitol, mobilizing hundreds to advocate for their rights.
- Published a groundbreaking report on school bullying of Muslim youth in California.
2014-2024: Expansion and Empowerment
- Launched the Muslim Gamechangers Network for youth leadership development.
- Successfully lobbied for August to be recognized as Muslim Appreciation Month in California.
- Began providing immigration services through our Immigrants’ Rights Program.
- Co-chaired the national #NoMuslimBanEver campaign, resulting in an injunction, allowing affected individuals to reapply for visas.
- Filed amicus briefs in support of the Palestine v Biden genocide lawsuit and a federal civil rights complaint against Berkeley Unified School District for anti-Palestinian discrimination.
Embracing Our Theme
We chose The Future of Muslim Power to underscore our vision for the next chapter. This theme emphasizes our dedication to fostering a resilient and influential Muslim community. Coupled with our tagline, “They Didn’t Know We Were Seeds,” it serves as a powerful reminder of our potential to rise stronger. After nine months of genocide in Gaza, it underscores our faith in God, collective resilience, and the unyielding strength that ensures we will be victorious in our fight for justice and human dignity.
Building on Our Legacy: Initiatives for 2024 and Beyond
As we step into this new chapter, we are proud to share several upcoming initiatives that align with our theme:
- Muslim Youth Leadership Program (July 25-28): Empowering young Muslims with leadership and advocacy skills.
- Ribbon Cutting for Our Permanent Office (Aug. 4): Marking our enduring presence and commitment to serving the community.
- 30th Anniversary Gala (Oct. 12): Celebrating our achievements and rallying support for the work ahead.
- Vote for Justice Campaign (through Nov. 5): Mobilizing our community to participate in the democratic process.
- Strategic Plan (coming soon): Outlining our goals and strategies to enhance our impact and further our mission in the coming years.
Join Us on This Journey
As we look toward the future, we invite you to join us in embracing the power and potential of our community. Together, we will continue to grow, thrive, and make a lasting impact. Thank you for being a part of this journey and for your unwavering support.
With gratitude,
Zahra Billoo, Esq.
