Amith Gupta is an attorney focusing on civil rights, national security, and international law. Through the Coalition for Civil Freedoms, Amith secured the release of multiple people serving lengthy terrorism-related sentences on bogus charges, including a philanthropist jailed for humanitarian relief to Somalia, a young man manipulated into carrying out a bomb plot by federal agents, and one member of the infamous Newburgh Sting defendants, a group of working class Black Muslims who were promised enormous sums of money by a government informant to take part in a government-manufactured terror plot.
Amith has separately litigated police and prison misconduct cases, securing settlements for individuals subjected to bogus arrests, excessive force during arrest, or violence or health issues in custody due to failures by prison guards to protect inmates.
Before joining CAIR-CA, Amith briefly worked as a case analyst at the Department of Defense’s Military Commissions Defense Organization, analyzing evidence on behalf of a client held at Guantanamo Bay and facing potential capital punishment for allegedly being involved in the 9/11 Attacks.
In civil and criminal cases, Amith has served as counsel for individuals who have faced prosecution for political activism and has also worked as a public defense lawyer.
Amith is barred in California, Georgia, and New York.
