Last week, CAIR-SFBA brought Bay Area Muslims to Sacramento for CAIR-CA’s Muslim Day at the Capitol. This week, we carried that momentum to Washington, D.C., joining 1,000 Muslim advocates from across the country for the U.S. Council of Muslim Organizations’ Advocacy Day.
Over two days, our team visited more than a dozen congressional offices. This kind of access is not accidental. It reflects years of relationship-building and a community that consistently shows up and demands to be heard.
What We Advocated For
We came to Washington with three priorities.
First, we challenged rising anti-Muslim bigotry in Congress. We raised concerns about efforts like the so-called “Sharia-Free America Caucus,” which targets Muslim religious practice under the guise of policy. We urged members to reject this discrimination clearly and publicly.
Second, we pushed for policies that protect immigrants’ rights and human dignity, including oversight of ICE, protection of due process, and an end to enforcement actions at sensitive locations like mosques, schools, and hospitals.
Third, we urged Congress to act to end the genocide and ongoing war. We called for support of War Powers legislation, an end to U.S. involvement in escalating regional conflict, a halt to weapons transfers to Israel, and restoration of UNRWA funding. Congress has the authority to act, and we made clear that it must.
