not only as entertainment but also as a tool for advocacy and driving social change. For more than a century, filmmakers have used cinema to shape our understanding of the world and spark important conversations.
From documenting real-world experiences to exploring societal themes through fictional storytelling,
films are an easy way to humanize social issues and make them accessible to audiences, ultimately sparking conversations and raising awareness that can lead to real change.
Educating Through Storytelling
Visual media is a unique educational tool that can be used to promote diverse viewpoints, challenge preconceptions, and ultimately change how we view the world around us. Unlike other educational methods, films
have the power to engage audiences through imagery, sound, and emotion, showing the human side of the topics they address.
Throughout history,
social justice films have been a way for storytellers to educate their audiences by immersing them in new perspectives and promoting understanding and critical thinking. They have become a way for viewers to easily understand the context, history, and personal impact of social issues.
Amplifying Underrepresented Voices
Film has become a medium for driving social change by
shining a light on important issues that have historically been misrepresented or excluded from mainstream media, such as racial injustice, environmental destruction, gender inequity, and human rights issues. It also provides a platform for underrepresented communities to bring their stories to life, center their voices, and encourage open discussions and dialogue.
By
amplifying the voices of those who have been marginalized, film not only enriches the cultural landscape but also helps shape a world where all people have the opportunity to see themselves represented, valued, and heard.
Inspiring Social Activism
Filmmakers often aim to evoke emotions from their audiences, from empathy and compassion to even sadness and moral outrage
. It makes viewers feel the urgency of social issues and prompts them to reflect on societal systems and their own roles in perpetuating or challenging injustice.

Film Censorship & Erasure
The creation of films can be a powerful catalyst for global action and because of this, they are often the target of censorship and erasure. Censorship efforts have been made to suppress social change by limiting access to alternative viewpoints, reinforcing stereotypes, or
removing the voices and stories of marginalized communities altogether.
Earlier this year, Netflix removed its entire Palestine Stories section from the streaming service. Although Netflix claims that this action was due to the licensing for these movies expiring,
anti-Palestinian groups have previously pressured Netflix to remove the films. Netflix also recently released a film about Mary, a Palestinian from Nazareth, starring an Israeli actress, further erasing the history and voices of Palestinians.

CAIR-LA is excited to announce it is hosting a Social Justice Film Screening to highlight the transformative power of storytelling through film—
and we want you to be a part of it!
Aspiring Muslim filmmakers between the ages of 13–33 are
invited to submit a short film using your unique perspective to shine a spotlight on important social justice issues, such as racial equality, environmental sustainability, gender equity, and human rights.

Tuesday, Dec. 31, at 11:59 p.m. PST
