About the Book
Sheikh Said Osman Tahir’s book, “African-American Muslim Communities in Los Angeles, California,” offers an extensive examination into the roots of early African-American Islamic movements. It highlights the role that African Muslims played in shaping the religious landscape in America and their influence on the growth of Islam throughout the country.
Sheikh Tahir’s book also explores the history and development of African-American Muslim communities in the Greater Los Angeles Area and discusses the significant political, economic, social, and educational influence these communities have had not only on the city but on the Southern California Muslim community as a whole.
This comprehensive work is based on interviews with prominent leaders of Islamic centers and mosques in LA, discussions with community members, a survey distributed to regular attendees of Friday prayers at local mosques, and other sources.
About the Author
Sheikh Tahir is an educator and prominent religious leader in the Greater LA Area. He was born in Ghana, West Africa, where he received his early Islamic education. He holds a Doctorate in Islamic Studies from the Muslim College in London, United Kingdom, and has taught at several Islamic schools and educational centers in Ghana and LA.
He also worked as a chaplain with the California Division of Juvenile Justice and later moved to the California Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation for several years while still serving the Muslim community as an imam.
Sheikh Tahir continues to serve as the religious director and imam of Masjid As-Salaam and the Islamic Studies Center in LA.
