Today, CAIR sued Columbia University.
For months, a congressional committee has pressured universities to hand over private student records—records that can be weaponized against those who dare to speak out for Palestine.
Columbia complied.
Now, Mahmoud Khalil, a graduate student and legal permanent resident of Palestinian origin, has been detained by ICE—without charges, without explanation.
His arrest is part of a coordinated national crackdown on pro-Palestinian voices, and it is not an isolated case. Nationwide, we are witnessing:
- The use of artificial intelligence by the government to police political speech and target international students with visa revocations.
- The threat of punishment and deportation of legal permanent residents who stand in support of our brothers and sisters in Palestine.

CAIR, along with many community and legal organizations, took immediate action to demand Mahmoud Khalil’s release, and we continue to defend our community’s civil rights while holding elected officials accountable for their failure to protect their constituents’ freedom, safety, and well-being.
