What Is Single-Issue Voting?
Single-issue voting refers to the practice of selecting a candidate based on their position on a specific issue, rather than their overall platform. People often prioritize issues based on personal values, experiences, and beliefs, and single-issue voters may vote for a candidate who aligns with their views on a single issue, even if they disagree with the candidate on other matters.
Why Palestine Is Not a Single-Issue Vote
As we quickly approach the upcoming election in November, the issue of Palestine has been labeled by many as a single-issue vote. People have criticized Palestine supporters for focusing on the genocide in Gaza, claiming that they are not concerned with other important issues. However, the past year has shown us that what happens in Palestine directly affects issues across the board—both domestically and internationally.
It is clear, especially to American Muslims, that Israel’s genocide in Gaza is NOT a single-issue vote.
1. Attacks on Civil Rights
As Israel commits a genocide in Gaza, elected officials have failed to uphold democratic values. This is clear by the relentless attacks on the First Amendment rights of Americans peacefully protesting nationwide in support of Palestinian human rights.
Colleges and universities across the country have actively suppressed their students’ First Amendment rights by implementing a Palestine exception to free speech and using intimidation, harassment, and excessive force against students participating in peaceful protest and assembly on their own campuses.
2. Rise in Hate
Hate and bias against Muslim, Palestinian, and Arab communities have risen at an alarming rate. In 2024, CAIR’s national office reported the highest number of complaints in its 30-year history.
Students, professionals, and other community members have reported facing threats, physical attacks, intimidation, harassment, and doxing due to their Muslim, Arab, or Palestinian identities, or their support for Palestine.
3. Misuse of Tax Dollars
Every year, the U.S. spends billions in federal tax dollars to fund Israel’s violent military operations. Since October 2023, elected officials have voted to spend a record amount of at least $17.9 billion in military aid to Israel.
Meanwhile, Americans are facing countless challenges here at home, including the lack of affordable housing, healthcare, and education. Despite an overwhelming majority of Americans calling for an arms embargo, the U.S. government has continued to show unconditional support for Israel and failed to address the fundamental issues impacting the well-being of its own citizens.
4. Environmental Impacts
In June, a study published in the Social Science Research Network estimated that the harmful greenhouse gas emissions from the first 120 days of Israel’s violent military campaign in Gaza were greater than the combined annual emissions of 26 individual countries.
The U.N. Environment Programme has also stated that Israel’s indiscriminate bombing has created unprecedented soil, water, and air pollution throughout the region, destroyed sanitation systems, and generated 39 million tons of debris.
5. Violation of Domestic & International Policies
Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International and B’Tselem, have well documented Israel’s war crimes against Palestinians, and the International Court of Justice ruled earlier this year that there is evidence that Israel is plausibly committing a genocide in Gaza.
International and U.S. laws prohibit aiding foreign militaries that violate human rights. The continued U.S. funding of military aid to Israel shows a clear disregard for these policies and solidifies its complicity in Israel’s atrocities.
Palestine has highlighted the dire consequences of U.S. imperialistic foreign policies, not only abroad, but also here at home. Elected officials are not just failing their constituents, they are failing the people of Palestine and the world. The U.S. government’s political, military, and economic backing of Israel is not aimed at protecting democracy or fostering peace; rather, it serves to maintain a strategic grip on the Middle East, perpetuating a system of imperial domination that oppresses people worldwide.
