The recent appointment of venture capitalist and Sequoia Capital partner Shaun Maguire to the Pentagon’s Science, Technology and Innovation Board (STIB) has sparked concern among civil rights advocates, members of the tech community, and others who say his record of public statements raises serious questions about his suitability for a federal advisory role.
A Pattern of Anti-Muslim Rhetoric
For years, Maguire’s social media posts and public comment have drawn criticism for being anti-Muslim and inflammatory. His selection to advise the Department of Defense on emerging technologies—a role that helps shape innovation priorities—has become a flashpoint in a broader conversation about accountability, public trust, and whose voices are elevated in federal decision-making.
CAIR Condemns the Appointment
CAIR National and CAIR-SFBA were among the organizations that quickly condemned the appointment, warning that individuals with a documented pattern of rhetoric targeting marginalized communities should not be elevated to positions of national influence.
Beyond social media, Maguire also faced criticism for amplifying false allegations against an innocent Muslim student and anti-genocide activist at Brown University, accusing him of a deadly campus shooting. Concerns over Maguire’s conduct have extended beyond civil rights organizations. More than 1,100 leaders in the tech industry signed an open letter to Sequoia Capital calling for “immediate and decisive action” over Maguire’s hateful and Islamophobic comments.
