What’s Happening
A devastating cyclone recently struck Sri Lanka, causing catastrophic flooding and landslides across the country. More than 1.4 million people have been affected, with over 400 people dead and at least 336 still missing.
The storm severely damaged bridges, communication networks, power lines, purification facilities, residential homes, and other critical community infrastructure, displacing at least 233,000 people.
Humanitarian Crisis
Sri Lanka’s president, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, has declared a nationwide state of emergency. Police, military personnel, civilian workers, and volunteer teams are assisting with evacuations and relief efforts.
One-third of the country remains without electricity or running water, and families are facing escalating health risks, including contaminated water and food shortages.
