If you have filed for asylum, you may have a few concerns, especially when it comes to processing times. Immigration case processing timelines may be long, but it’s important to not give up on your case.
If you’ve already filed for asylum, here are some important steps to consider:
- Make sure to watch for USCIS notices for biometric appointments or to inform you that your case has been approved. These papers will have “Form I-797C, Notice of Action” printed in the upper right corner of the paper. Please show up for your biometrics appointment date noted on these sheets, and keep all these documents for your records.
- Make sure you watch for USCIS Request for Evidence (RFE) letters and respond to them by the deadline noted on them. A Request for Evidence is issued by the USCIS if they need more evidence or clarification before they can approve your case. Ignoring this can be fatal to your case.
- If you have submitted your Asylum application and are in Removal Proceedings, you can continue to find proof of persecution in your home country or any other proof that may help your case.
- Please note that you need to file for asylum within one year of your arrival to the U.S. If you are close to that deadline, file as soon as possible.
- You should not abandon your asylum application while waiting for another type of application to be approved. Always consult with an immigration attorney before withdrawing their asylum application.
