(LOS ANGELES, CA – 11/8/2023) – The Greater Los Angeles Area office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-LA) today commended council members of the city of Cudahy, Calif., for supporting a ceasefire in Gaza.
On Tuesday, Nov. 7, in a resounding show of solidarity and peace, Mayor Daisy Lomeli of the city of Cudahy, along with Councilmembers Elizabeth Alcantar and Ed. Cynthia Gonzalez, took a strong stance in favor of a ceasefire in Palestine and support for the innocent people under siege in Gaza.

The resolution passed with a 3-2 vote shortly after 10:30 p.m. and after more than two hours of comments from the public in person and via Zoom. Most of the comments voiced support for the resolution.
In a significant move towards justice, the city recognized the ongoing human rights violations occurring in Gaza. The resolution states that:
WHEREAS, the City stands in solidarity with the Palestinian people of Gaza, who are currently facing collective punishment by the state of Israel; and
WHEREAS, collective punishment is considered a war crime under international law, and refers to a form of sanction imposed on persons or a group of persons in response to a crime committed by one of them or a member of the group;
In a statement, CAIR-LA Policy and Advocacy Manager Basha Jamil said:
“CAIR-LA applauds the principled and moral position Mayor Lomeli and her colleagues have taken and hopes that leadership in other cities will follow their lead to stand with the people of Palestine facing genocide and ethnic cleansing. The majority of Americans are calling for a ceasefire and we commend the city of Cudahy for echoing the call of the American people for an end to the violence
Since Israel’s ongoing assault on Gaza began on Oct. 7, it has destroyed entire residential neighborhoods and critical infrastructure, displaced over one million people, and killed over 10,000 civilians, including 4,000 children. Human rights organizations and advocates from all over the world have stated that Israel’s cutting off food, water, electricity, and medicine while it also indiscriminately drops bombs on homes, hospitals, bakeries, schools, mosques, churches and even refugee camps in Gaza, amounts to war crimes.
