(LOS ANGELES, CA – 11/12/2019) The Greater Los Angeles Area office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-LA) today joined the national office of CAIR in calling on the U.S. Supreme Court to oppose President Trump’s attempt to terminate the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which safeguards from deportation more than 600,000 undocumented young people — known as “dreamers” — brought to the United States as children.
This morning, the Supreme Court head 80 minutes of oral arguments between Trump administration Solicitor General of the U.S. Noel Francisco and California Solicitor General Michael Mongan, who represents state and local governments challenging Trump’s attempt to dismantle DACA.
The court’s ruling is expected to be handed down until next spring or summer.

In Los Angeles, CAIR-LA is participating in a rally and concert in support of Dreamers from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Levitt Pavilion at MacArthur Park, 607 S. Park View. The event is co-sponsored by CAIR-LA, the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA), Mi Familia Vota and the Korean Resource Center, among others.

“We are proud to join with our national office in calling for the Supreme Court to preserve the DACA program and we stand in solidarity with our human rights allies in supporting the more than 600,000 young people brought to America as children. It is imperative that our undocumented community members feel safe in the country and feel like they belong.
In a statement, CAIR, the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, said:
“As with the Muslim Ban, President Trump’s attempt to terminate DACA is driven by the demands of anti-immigrant extremists.
“The U.S. Supreme Court must stand with the Dreamers, some of the most dynamic and success-oriented members of our society.
“The court should reject Trump’s use of the threat to end DACA as a bargaining chip to extract immigration concessions from Congress.
“Without DACA, countless young Americans would be forced back to living in the shadows, rendering them unable to contribute to our nation’s social fabric and economy.
“American Muslims will continue to push for measures that protect undocumented youth and support comprehensive immigration reform that includes a roadmap to citizenship for the nation’s 12 million undocumented residents.
