Afghan arrivals at Know Your Rights presentation

(LOS ANGELES, CA – 3/22/2022) – The Los Angeles office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-LA), along with Afghan American Muslim Outreach (AAMO), UPLIFT Charity, and the Islamic Society of Orange County (ISOC), recently hosted an Asylum Legal Clinic for Afghan arrivals in Orange County.

The event, which was held at ISOC on March 19, served to inform Afghan arrivals about their rights as well as assist them with beginning the immigration process. With the help of CAIR-LA’s Immigrants’ Rights Center (IRC), first-year law student volunteers from UC Irvine School of Law worked with volunteer translators to assist the families with their immigration intake forms.

Also in attendance were Orange County Board of Supervisor Doug Chaffee and his Deputy Chief of Staff Al Jabbar, who gave the families a warm welcome and extended their support in the coming months.

In a statement, CAIR LA Deputy Executive Director Masih Fouladi said:

“CAIR-LA will continue to support Afghan arrivals to our region throughout the immigration process. It was an honor to assist the families that attended the legal clinic, and we look forward to continuing to support them as they adjust to life in the Greater Los Angeles area. It is imperative that the arrivals are welcomed and easily integrated into our community. This event was a great opportunity for them to become aware of their rights as recent arrivals and begin their path to citizenship.

“This work would not be possible without support from the Weingart Foundation, Rose Hills Foundation, and Islamic Relief. We look forward to being able to assist more Afghan arrivals at similar events in the future.”

CAIR-LA, Afghan American Muslim Outreach (AAMO), Qazizada Foundation, and other Afghan-serving organizations recently launched the American Network of Services for Afghan Refugees of Southern California (ANSAR of SoCal) to better serve the Afghan community through comprehensive wrap-around services.

CAIR-LA is Southern California’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice and empower American Muslims.
