Humera Nayeb

Immigrants’ Rights Legal Fellow

Humera Nayeb is an Immigrants’ Rights Legal Fellow at CAIR-LA. She is a first-generation Afghan American. Given that her family came to the United States as refugees in the late 1980s, immigration is a cause that is very dear to her heart.

Humera received her Bachelor of Arts in English from Baylor University in Texas and later attended the University of Illinois Chicago School of Law, where she obtained her Juris Doctor degree with a concentration in International Human Rights Law. Humera graduated cum laude and in the top 30% of her class. During law school, she interned at the Chicago Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and worked as a 711-Licensed Student Attorney at the International Human Rights Clinic at the UIC School of Law. In her numerous semesters at the clinic, Humera served as Team Leader of an impact report team that sought to document human rights violations by law enforcement agencies during Black Lives Matter activism in Chicago, IL. She contributed significantly to the report that was subsequently published in 2022: “Violating Human Rights: Chicago Law Enforcement’s Excessive Force Against Black Lives Matter Activists and Human Rights Defenders.” Prior to joining CAIR-LA, Humera also worked in corporate law in New York City.

Outside of her professional life, Humera enjoys traveling, fashion, cooking, and spending time with her friends and family.
