(SAN DIEGO, CA, 1/31/2022) – The San Diego chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-San Diego) today condemned an incident in which a Coronado city official allegedly targeted an Asian-American couple with racist comments.

A video originally posted to Tik Tok shows a man and woman making racist comments directed at an Asian-American couple. A caption over the recording alleges that the couple began calling the Asian-American couple racist slurs and blamed Asians for the COVID-19 pandemic. The man is believed to be the city of Coronado’s Director of Golf and Recreation Services. Coronado City Manager Tina Friend said immediate action was taken to “look into the report.”

In a statement, CAIR-San Diego Associate Executive Director Tazheen Nizam said:

“Such incidents are not to be taken lightly. Hate crimes across San Diego County have been increasing. Collectively we need to speak against this troubling incident and demand action. The incident last July at Coronado High School is still fresh in our minds. Some very difficult and necessary conversations need to take place. As an Asian-American, I am appalled and distraught.”

Nizam noted that last year, CAIR-San Diego joined community partners at a news conference outside the office of Escondido Unified High School District to call for action in response to racist behavior reportedly exhibited by the Coronado boys’ basketball team during an altercation in the aftermath of a championship game.
